The Cima Vanscuro

Long circular walk that takes us to visit a stretch of the Italian-Austrian border crest, the scene of military movements during the First World War. The area crossed is located almost in the North-West corner of the Comelicense territory, in the Municipality of Comelico Superiore, a stretch of the Carnic Alps that goes from Col Quaterna’ to Monte Cavallino.
It starts from Silvella Alpine Hut still in use as a shelter for cows, take the mule track with CAI 146 and go up to Silvella Pass at the foot of Col Quaterna’. Now, we leave the comfortable road and head north along the path marked CAI 160 and go up to the Sella dei Frugnoni, where the first military remains await us. The rest of the journey, towards the east, is practiced on the well-trodden Traversata Carnica with trail sign CAI-160/403 in a continuous ups and downs that winds along the state border. Along the way you can admire old caves, trenches and the remains of various military structures, on the Austrian side there is also a beautiful alpine lake the Obstanser. At about half of the itinerary you can easily climb to the top of the place, La Cima Vanscuro 2578 m asl, a breathtaking panorama from both the Austrian and the Italian side.
Continue the Traversata Carnica, up to approximately half of the foot of Monte Cavallino, then leave it, and return by descending the CAI 146 path, this time passing through the Rigoieto Alpine Hut.
